Vietnam War-era M1-style combat helmet associated with the Republic of Vietnam Marine Division’s 1st Marine Battalion, known as “Quai Dieu,” or “Monster Birds.” The steel shell features an elaborate hand-painted camouflage pattern centered by the distinctive emblem of the 1st Marine Battalion, bearing a bird device, stars, the numeral “1” and “QUAI DIEU.” The interior is additionally marked “Tieu Doan 1 – TQLC” and “1972,” referring to the 1st Battalion, Vietnamese Marine Corps. Fitted with a U.S.-manufactured M1972-pattern Ground Troop’s Type I liner bearing contract number DSA100-74-C-0208 and dated September 7, 1973. The laminated nylon liner retains its removable suspension and leather sweatband.
Condition: Displays honest service wear throughout, including paint loss, scratches, oxidation and edge wear. The steel shell has cracking and separation along portions of the rim and is missing its left-side bail and chinstrap. The liner shows exterior finish loss and fraying around the edge, while its suspension remains largely complete.
