Scarce late-World War II Inland Division Presentation Grade M1 Carbine manufactured by General Motors, serial number “XC42”. Early in the war, General Motors Inland Div. designated the “X” block of M1 Carbine serial numbers for experimental receivers. Later, “X” prefix serial numbers were applied to rifles intended for presentation to senior executives and officials. These exemplary carbines were hand built from select parts. Only about 100 of the “XC” series were ever manufactured. This lot includes a provenance note recording that the rifle was presented to I. W. Thompson on September 12, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan. Includes six (6) magazines (one in original packaging), two (2) mag pouches, cleaning kit and hard case. Receiver has “U.S. CARBINE | CAL .30 M1” and, behind sight “INLAND DIV. | XC42.” Barrel marked “INLAND MFG. DIV | GENERAL MOTORS | 9-44.” Sling cutout stamped “H.I.” Safety toggle marked “M.” Lacks US Government acceptance proofs, correct for a private presentation rifle. FFL or C&R required for transfer.
