Description

A Muromachi-era wakizashi, signed as being made by Sanesue, a resident of Sekishu. Sekishu is in the Iwami Province, modern-day Shimane Prefecture. | | Iwami Province is best known in sword history as the home of the Sekishu school, famously founded during the Nanbokucho period (14th century) by Sekishu Naotsuna, one of the legendary Masamune Jutetsu (Ten Brilliant Pupils of Masamune). The inscription prefix Sekishu-ju (“Resident of Sekishu”) identifies this as a provincial piece from Iwami, likely produced within the local tradition influenced by Soshu-den workmanship. : Blades from Sekishu outside the primary Naotsuna line are comparatively uncommon, making regional mei (inscriptions) from Iwami of specific interest to regional collectors. Wakizashi is approximately 20 inches tip to end of tang.

Condition

Some wear and notching of the blade, some oxidation. Comes with a pine needle motif saya, which needs to be replaced.
